However, they can be prevented by identifying them and incorporating a few exercises into your child&#8217;s routine.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is torticollis? How does it manifest itself?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Torticollis<\/strong> is a posture of the head and body that occurs when a <strong>baby&#8217;s head is constantly tilted to one side<\/strong> and turned to the opposite side. It can also be observed when the baby&#8217;s body tilts to the same side of the head.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is plagiocephaly?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5582\" src=\"https:\/\/nxtgphysio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Plagio_Brachy_V2-copy-700x1120.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"701\" height=\"1121\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nxtgphysio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Plagio_Brachy_V2-copy-700x1120.jpg 700w, https:\/\/nxtgphysio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Plagio_Brachy_V2-copy-250x400.jpg 250w, https:\/\/nxtgphysio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Plagio_Brachy_V2-copy-768x1229.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nxtgphysio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Plagio_Brachy_V2-copy-960x1536.jpg 960w, https:\/\/nxtgphysio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Plagio_Brachy_V2-copy-1280x2048.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/nxtgphysio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Plagio_Brachy_V2-copy-120x192.jpg 120w, https:\/\/nxtgphysio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Plagio_Brachy_V2-copy-500x800.jpg 500w, https:\/\/nxtgphysio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Plagio_Brachy_V2-copy-scaled.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 701px) 100vw, 701px\" \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>Source Image : CHU Ste Justine &#8211; D\u00e9partement de physioth\u00e9rapie<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Plagiocephaly<\/strong> is a <strong>deformation of the skull.<\/strong> The skull flattens due to prolonged asymmetrical weight-bearing.<\/p>\n<p>There are also other signs of plagiocephaly and torticollis. <strong>An asymmetrical forehead<\/strong> (more rounded on one side than the other) or a <strong>flattened cheek<\/strong> on the side of head rotation are good indicators.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the<strong> best tips and exercises<\/strong> to reduce the risk of torticollis and plagiocephaly, according to our pediatric physiotherapist.<\/p>\n<p>1- Sleep on your back, as per Canadian paediatric standards.<\/p>\n<p>2- To avoid torticollis, it&#8217;s important to<strong> work on your child&#8217;s neck<\/strong> muscles and help him or her master straightening the head. To do this, make sure baby&#8217;s head is centered and not tilted to one side. Always present toys lower than the level of your baby&#8217;s nose, to help your baby&#8217;s head sit upright.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t panic! Children between 0 and 3 months of age cannot <strong>keep their heads centered<\/strong> on their own. They can turn their heads, but you need to make sure they can turn in both directions without tilting. Around 3 months, the child should have acquired this motor ability and be able to hold his head in the center.<\/p>\n<p>3- There&#8217;s also an exercise to encourage head alignment:<strong> help your child bring his feet and hands to the center<\/strong> and stretch the trunk extensors. Remember to place the source of stimulation lower than the eyes.<\/p>\n<p>5- <strong>Holding your child in your arms<\/strong> can also help avoid head pressure. This promotes head and trunk control in newborns. The way you carry your child can help reduce torticollis\/plagiocephaly. Make sure you put the <strong>baby&#8217;s head on your left arm as well as your right<\/strong>. It&#8217;s also advisable to put your child on his tummy for at least 45 minutes a day, and to separate periods of tummy time from periods of wakefulness.
