David Lutzy

Endurance cyclist

Biography

David Lutzy is a Canadian endurance athlete competing in road cycling, gravel, and ultra-distance events. He has lived with progressive vision loss for over twenty years, a reality that has profoundly shaped his athletic journey without ever limiting his commitment to performance. In 2024, the progression of his condition made racing without visual assistance impossible, marking a significant transition in his sporting career. Two options became clear: stop… or reinvent what was possible. David chose reinvention.

Background

Before cycling, David excelled in disciplines where technical mastery, risk management, and precision were essential. A former member of the Canadian wingsuit team for four years, he has also practiced aviation, climbing, and high-altitude mountaineering. These experiences built a rigorous performance mindset based on preparation, mutual trust, and decision-making under pressure. On the bike, David adapted his environment and methods to continue performing at a high level. Since 2022, his return to competition has been marked by steady progression in road, gravel, and ultra-endurance events. Beginning in 2025, he partnered closely with cycling guide Yannick Banville, demonstrating that a structured and collaborative approach makes it possible to remain highly competitive despite significant visual constraints. David and his guide, Yannick Banville, race as a single team: same pace, same decisions, same effort. Yannick reads the terrain, while David matches the intensity.
