Preventing Common Injuries in Pickleball

Dominic Baillargeon, pht.

Pickleball is a rapidly growing sport, but like any physical activity, it carries its own risk of injuries. Here are some of the most common injuries and how to prevent them:

Sprains and Strains

– Prevention: A proper warm-up, appropriate stretching, and wearing shoes with good support and traction can help prevent these injuries.

Tendinitis (especially in the elbow, known as “tennis elbow”)

– Prevention: Avoid overloading the arm by using proper technique, switch racket sides frequently, and strengthen forearm muscles.

Knee Injuries

– Prevention: Wear appropriate sports shoes, strengthen leg muscles, and adopt a proper movement technique on the court.

Shoulder Injuries

– Prevention: Avoid repetitive and forceful motions, strengthen shoulder muscles, and enhance your striking technique.

Ankle Injuries

– Prevention: Strengthen the stabilizing muscles of the ankle, wear shoes offering good support, and be aware of your surroundings to avoid tripping or slipping.

Heat Strokes and Dehydration

– Prevention: Play during cooler times of the day, wear light clothing, drink plenty of water, and take regular breaks.

Injuries from Falls

– Prevention: Always be aware of your surroundings. Ensure the playing area is clean and free from debris. Use shoes that provide good traction.

Bruises and Contusions (caused by the ball)

– Prevention: Wear appropriate clothing and always be alert to the ball and your positioning on the court.

In summary, preventing injuries in pickleball largely rests on proper preparation, appropriate technique, muscle strengthening, and awareness of one’s environment. By keeping these tips in mind, you can enjoy pickleball while minimizing the risk of injury
