PAIN: CERVICALGIA / CERVICOBRAQUIALGIA

Cervicalgia is a painful condition that originates from the neck region but can be felt in various ways, including headaches and local pain in the neck and upper back. Combination of pain may also occur at specific times of the day or during certain activities. These pains are mainly caused by muscle tension, lack of mobility between the vertebrae, or nerve impingement as they exit the spinal column. Posture plays an extremely important role in neck pain. In fact, poor posture of the back and neck significantly increases muscle tension in the neck and reduces the range of available movements.

Cervicalgia Cervicalgia can cause what is known as mechanical pain, which occurs during movement and disappears at rest. Typically, it is felt as a pinching or blocking sensation when moving the head, such as checking blind spots while driving or playing badminton. When repeated multiple times, these movements can irritate the stiff neck segment, leading to increased symptoms or the emergence of new pains. For example, a tolerable pinch in the neck at the beginning of a badminton game can become very painful towards the end of the match and even cause headaches or radiating pain in the shoulder and arm.

Cervicalgia can also cause what is known as neurological pain, which is often perceived as burning sensations, hot/cold sensations, or electric shocks. This type of pain tends to increase throughout the day or activity, as well as with fatigue and stress. It is important to differentiate between brachialgia with neurological pain and cervical herniated disc. If you experience pain, loss of strength, or a decrease in skin sensitivity in both arms or legs simultaneously, it is important to consult a physiotherapist or doctor as soon as possible. It is also important to seek prompt medical attention if these pains are accompanied by dizziness, vision or hearing problems, loss of consciousness, or migraines.

Cervicobrachialgia involves combined pain in the neck and arm or solely in the arm, originating from the neck. As mentioned earlier, pain can radiate from the neck to the arm when aggravated, but it can also be felt solely in the arm, particularly in cases of nerve compression. The nerves of the arm originate from the neck as they exit the spinal column and extend all the way to the hand. That is why neck pain can be accompanied by pain anywhere in the arm and shoulder, depending on the affected nerves.

Physiotherapy treatments help reduce pain and muscle tension, restore mobility in your neck, and assist you in correcting your posture. We aim to provide you with the necessary tools to better understand what causes your pain, how to eliminate it, and how to prevent its recurrence.
